Recognition of Prior Learning

Experience carries weight in education and training.

Formal education has always carried greater weight than learning gained through experience. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) exists to give credit for knowledge and skills already held, however they were acquired.

Underlying principles
  • Fair access to education and training for anyone wishing to further their learning.
  • Redressing past unfair education practices that prevented people from studying further.
  • Recognising and crediting learning against formal qualifications and unit standards where the knowledge is already held.
Who is eligible?

RPL may benefit people who:

  • Have never attended formal schooling but have work and life experience.
  • Did not finish formal education but have learnt a great deal in the workplace.
  • Lack the minimum requirements for entry to a formal programme but believe they meet them in practice.
  • Are under-qualified and want to up-skill and improve their qualifications.
  • Have attended short courses without a formal qualification in that area.
  • Are self-taught.
